Tilonia - Artisans of India

Bandhej

Flying fingers wrap thread around small pinches of cloth to create intricate patterns for bandhej, or tie-dyed fabric, produced by artisans of Roopangarh, a village in Ajmer district in Rajasthan.

Bandhej, also known as bandhani, is a traditional form of tie and dye, dating back nearly 5000 years ago. it is the oldest tie and dye tradition that is still practiced in India.

Bandhej comes in a variety of designs, colors and motifs and these variations are region-specific. Each district has its own distinct method of tie and dye which makes the pattern recognizable and gives it a different name.
